Stinks and stains are the usual reasons jeans get tossed in the washer. ODO estimates that an average pair of jeans will go through the equivalent of 7,200 glasses of water during its lifetime—a heavy toll. But ODO says its new dual technology eliminates the need for washing for months at a time, meaning the jeans may represent an unusual way to conserve water.

The denim that ODO’s team of textile engineers and designers have developed marries two patent pending features.

{{amazon name="Resolve Max - Trigger Laundry Stain Removers, 16 Ounce", asin="B004X1VR72", align="right"}} First, moisture is repelled by a denim surface rippled with billions of microscopic “peaks.” These peaks reduce the contact area between water, dirt, and oil touching the surface, significantly reducing adhesion. Potential stains—even oil-based sauces or honey—are said to simply roll off, and can be rinsed off with water if they don't.

ODO’s anti-stink technology uses metallic silver fibers woven into the denim. On exposure to moisture and oxygen (such as sweat), the silver releases positively charged ions that repel odor-causing bacteria, reducing bacteria levels by almost 100 percent within one hour.

The brand's jeans will be available for women in slim or skinny fit. Men’s styles include slim, slim straight fit, and straight fit. Fabric options include raw (deep blue), rinse, dark wash, and light washed colors.

ODO Denim more than doubled its Kickstarter funding goal in its first couple days on the site. The jeans are expected to retail for $130 a pair when they are released, but if you’re intrigued by the idea of self-cleaning denim, you can preorder a pair for $99 (including shipping within the U.S.).

The jeans are expected to ship in June of next year.
