Needlework may not sound like a launching pad for high-tech, but Brother's latest sewing product is downright impressive. Released in September, the Dream Machine is a sewing machine that not only sews and embroiders—it digitizes.
The Dream Machine's embroidery and sewing modes are similar to other machines on the market, but the new digitizing function allows you to scan your own images and designs onto the machine's computer. Users simply place an image—children's drawings, hand-drawn quilt labels, printed designs, whatever—onto the plate. The machine then scans the image and converts it into an embroidery template.
There are three stitch options—the running stitch, satin stitch, and triple stitch—each of which creates a significantly different look.

The Dream Machine's touchscreen is another enhanced feature. As big as an iPad mini, the display can be used to select line colors, fill in a chosen image, and to start an embroidery. It also provides access to a bank of embroidery templates licensed from Disney.
The Dream Machine has a large throat for quilters and an embroidery arm that moves automatically to the edge of the table and out of the way during sewing mode. You can also remove the arm to create a more traditional sewing machine table.
The downside? It costs up to $14,000, so you would have to put off buying a new car to afford this thing. But for folks who are truly dedicated to sewing and embroidery, it doesn't get more high-tech—or high-end—than this.
