For all its benefits, the front-load washing machine has one major flaw: Once you’ve started a cycle, you can’t just open the door and drop in that one sock that fell out of the laundry basket on your way downstairs.

Now, Samsung wants to change that.

The Samsung AddWash WW8500

The new WW8500 AddWash looks like a traditional front-load washer. However, there’s a small opening inside the main door that lets you add items after the wash cycle has started.

Most front-loaders and high-efficiency top-loaders force you to press pause and wait for the washer to drain in order to add an extra item; AddWash solves that issue once and for all by stopping the drum immediately and letting you add your extras right away. It's not just clothes, either—you can also add softener mid-cycle.

Washers with AddWash technology are already on sale in Korea, and the WW8500 will be coming to Europe by the end of the year. We don’t know yet if a similar setup will arrive on U.S. shores. However, considering how many complaints we’ve heard from unsatisfied front-load washer owners, it’s a good bet we’ll be seeing AddWash in an American model at CES in January.
